Planning Groups Sponsor Fishing Rodeos
During May throughout Garrett County , Community Planning Groups sponsored fishing rodeos as a way to strengthen family ties and promote fun, drug and alcohol free activities.
Kitzmiller Empowerment Group held a fishing rodeo in Kitzmiller, on May 6th. The 46 participants had a chance of receiving prizes for the first fish caught during the even, the largest fish and the person who caught the most fish in each age group. The event was sponsored by the Kitzmiller Empowerment Group, Garrett County Health Department and the Department of Natural Resources.
The Grantsville Involvement Group held their annual fishing rodeo on May 7th at the pond in Grantsville Park . There were about 125 participants who took advantage of the sunny weather. Children age 3-16 could fish for free and each child was allowed to catch five fish. They could keep the fish, give them away or throw them back into the pond. Parents could cast the line, but kids had to reel in the fish or be disqualified from receiving anything prizes. Each child was given a reward because a generous cash donation by Jim Bone of Frostburg.
The Accident Community Planning Group, in partnership with The Wild Turkey Federation, held their annual Fishing Rodeo at the town pond in Accident on May 21st. More than 130 people took advantage of the sunny weather, the biting fish and the plentiful food. The Wild Turkey Federation offered a JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship) Membership to each child, gave out turkey calls and provided door prizes, pizza and drinks.
