News Release For Immediate Release: June 13, 2011 Contact Person: Diane Lee, PIO, 301-334-7730 “Our Community Rocks” Summer Art Camp The Garrett County AmeriCorps team is pleased to announce the return of two summer art camps. The theme for 2011 is “Our Community Rocks.” The theme is derived from the concept that our community can “rock” the environment by recycling, reusing, and reducing. All crafts for the art camp will be created out of recyclable materials and a community rock mosaic will be created. Camp Colorful Smiles, a day camp for special needs children up to age 18 and their families will be held on June 27 from 9 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Oakland Community Center / Armory. Parents and/or guardians are required to attend. The second camp is Junior Art Day; this camp is offered on June 28 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. for children ages 3-7 and from 1 - 4 p.m. for youth ages 8-12. Both sessions are at the Oakland Community Center/Armory. The role of the camp staff is to expose children to a variety of recycle materials so they can create art. Children can begin to understand about the importance of saving our environment at a very young age and share the message with adults in their lives. “Art is about imagination and using recyclable materials is an inexpensive way to produce a work of art,” said Alexandra Cortez, AmeriCorps member at the Garrett County Health Department. “Children will learn about their environment through a story called, Sharon Finds the Environment .” Both camps are free and are for Garrett County residents only. For more information or for reservations please call Alexandra Cortez at 301-334-7730 or 301-895-3111. Camp Colorful Smiles and Junior Art Camp is supported by: Garrett County Health Department, Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism, and The Garrett County Arts Council, and Sponsored by AmeriCorps of Garrett County. |
