SADD Sponsors Grim Reaper Event at NHS -
Highlights Issue of Impaired Driving Deaths

The Happy SADD Club of Grantsville and Northern High School and MADD Maryland member Heather Christner sponsored a "Grim Reaper" day at the high school just before prom. Nationally someone is killed by a drunk driver every 33 minutes. “We took this opportunity before prom to remind students that drinking and driving do not mix at any age,” said Sharon Menges, SADD advisor. Shown in the photo are students that the "Reaper" (Andrew Beachy) randomly picked out every 33 minutes from 1 until 3 p.m. on that day. Shown from left to right, front row are Jessica Speicher, Chelsie Kirkham, Adria Graham, Kai Senese back row: Teddy Linton, Dillan Miller, Kate Wood, Hannah Bequette and Andrew Beachy, the Grim Reaper. To indicate each selection, a gong rang out over the loud speaker every time someone was chosen. Students were given a sign to wear that explained how they "died" from an alcohol related crash, and most had their faces painted with tears down the side of their cheek. In addition, a red flower was left on their desk in memory of their “death.” At the end of the day, the gong sounded 8 times in memory of the students that were taken away.
