“Our Communities Can” Summer Art Camp Scheduled

The Garrett County AmeriCorps team is pleased to announce the return of two summer art camps. The theme for 2010 is “Our Communities Can,” derived from the concept that communities can make a difference in the environment by recycling, reusing, and reducing. All crafts for the art camp will be created out of recyclable materials. The plan is to take something old and turn it into a work of art.

The first of the camps is Junior Art Day, which is offered at the Oakland Community Center/Armory on June 21 from 9 a.m.to12 p.m. for children ages 3-7 and 1 to 4 p.m. for 8-12 year old youth.

Camp Colorful Smiles, a day camp for special needs children up to age 18 and their families, will be held on June 23, 2010, from 9 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Oakland Community Center / Armory. Parents or guardians are required to attend.

The role of the camp staff is to expose children to a variety of recycle materials so they can create art. Children can begin to understand the importance of saving our environment at a very young age and share the message with adults in their lives.

“Art and preserving our environment go hand in hand and the sky is the limit as to what one can accomplish with both,” said AmeriCorps Member Austin Smith. “It takes the imagination of children to make a difference.”

Both camps are free of charge and are for Garrett County residents only. For more information or for reservations please contact Austin Smith at 301-334-7730 or 301-895-3111.

Camp Colorful Smiles and Junior Art Camp are supported by Garrett County Health Department, Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism, Garrett County Arts Council, and sponsored by AmeriCorps of Garrett County.
