Drinking and Driving
If you look at different signs and posters around where you live, you will probably see something with the message “You Drink, You Drive, You Lose!” Most of us don't really think of that as a big deal. I mean c'mon! The phrases, signs, posters, billboards, and whatever else that it's slapped on are everywhere. Not to mention the radio and TV advertisements which are always telling you to drink responsibly! Frankly that's pretty annoying! I was one to roll my eyes at warnings from my parents and other adults in my life. I would always huff and say “Yeah, yeah I know, I'm not gonna drink… sheesh!”
Until recently I didn't realize how harsh the penalties for drinking and driving were. My coworker and I attended several court hearings for DUI. At first we thought, “This is going to be so boring!” As we sat and listened, we were shocked at some of the sentences these people got! Every one of them had to potentially serve jail time, was charged with multiple fines, was required to complete at least 40 hours of community service, and was either put on supervised or unsupervised probation. On top of all that, a few of them had wrecked their cars in the process! One night of drinking caused them all this trouble. I bet they felt stupid! So here's the deal. Don't drink and drive. Yeah, I know you have heard it a million times, but seriously do want to spend months paying for one wild night? Yeah, me neither!

Think Spring
Blog 1, Issue 1
College has started again for the Spring Semester and along with school starting, comes the inevitable question “What is there to do?” For many students the question is nothing at all. [This misconception may lead to the whole so called college right of passage to drink] But what many students don't realize is that Garrett County is full of recreational potential. After all what did parent's do for fun in the pre X-box era? Garrett County is full of natural. beauty, volunteer opportunities, and many other pre X-box activities.
Before video games what did people do for fun? In Garrett County we still have many things to do. For example, bowling continues to be a source of fun for many in the county providing fun at a minimal cost. If you are more of a movie person, then how about a night at the movies? Garrett 8 Cinema offers discounted prices two nights a week! Or if you are pressed for cash, how about striking up a good old fashion game of football, baseball, or basketball with friends? Spending time this way is not only free but builds your bonds of trust and friendship. Maybe you like to cook, well BBQ's are not only a fun way to spend time but they show off your culinary skills. Here's an idea, combine the impromptu sporting game with the BBQ to make a day of food and fellowship with friends.
Many organizations throughout the county are looking for a few good men and women who put the needs of others before themselves. Volunteering is not only fun but if you like to be involved with people then volunteering offers a plethora of opportunities for you. As a College student, volunteering isn't always viewed as a great way to spend time, the truth is that when a person volunteers their time, the community views that person as a caring and productive citizen. Garrett County has a boundless array of activities to volunteer with. If you are more dramatic then try your hand at volunteering at Our Town Theatre, whether acting, running lights, building, or stage managing. This place is a great place to meet new and interesting people. If you are into medical aspects and are EMT certified then you could volunteer with a rescue squad or hospital. If you like to help communities then just call the Health Education and Outreach Department and ask if any Community Planning Group are in need of volunteers. The Garrett County Community Planning Groups are always looking for help for events that they may be having.
Perhaps you are an outdoor person. Then you have come to the right place for any outdoor activity. Picture this, beautiful blue sky, green leaves and the roar of a waterfall gently falling over a cliff. If that tickles your fancy then Swallow Falls State Park is your kind of place. With opportunities from swimming, fishing, camping, and BBQ this can really be a fun day or weekend trip; especially if you need to escape the mounding pressure of homework and exams. If you like boating, Deep Creek Lake offers this type of recreation; Broadford Lake is a great place for boating and fishing. Not too far away from Swallow Falls is perhaps one of the most placid places in Garrett County, Herrington Manner State Park, a very peaceful slice of heaven located in these marvelous mountains of ours. This park offers swimming, fishing and boating on the lake. Other activities include one of the best hiking trails in the county, large fields that are perfect for kites, and the opportunities to learn about and view the local wildlife.
So this spring if you are feeling the pressure from friends to drink or do drugs, remember Garrett County has many other activities to do that are healthy and safe. Whether volunteering, hanging out at the local pizza parlors, or hiking through the boundless everlasting beauty of our county, Garrett County takes care of each other and there is ALWAYS something to do.
