The Garrett County Health Department recently conducted a Second Step training for Garrett County Head Start staff. Second Step is a violence prevention/social skills program that teaches participants skills central to healthy social-emotional development, including empathy, impulse control, problem solving, and emotion/anger management.

"The second step curriculum is a valuable social and emotional learning program that is used in our Head Start Centers to teach children skills that are essential to their success in life," said Mark Colaw, Head Start Director. “The Health Department staff is wonderful to work with and very dedicated to working with programs like Head Start in providing this valuable program.”

The head start centers implement the evidence-based program at high fidelity. The centers have added a parent newsletter/questionnaire which educates the parents about the core concepts of the Second Step program. Parent who read the Second Step newsletter and return the questionnaire to their center earn a free book for their child.

The Garrett County Health Department, in conjunction with the Garrett County Partnership for Children and Families, Inc. are planning a Second Step training for the Partners After School staff in December.
