The Garrett County Health Department is anticipating the start of their fourteenth year of AmeriCorps service in August. "I really enjoy working with all the kids in the different programs," said current AmeriCorps member Hana Smith. "I hope to come back for a second year to continue to give to the community and get more experience." AmeriCorps members at the Health Department receive experience in many different areas of public health. Members help with the health department after school programs and direct a teen health theater troupe. They also assist in the child safety seat program and highway safety program. Additional responsibilities include a dental education program, coordinating agency recycling and an Adopt-a-Highway projects. Members receive a living allowance as well as an educational award.
