NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE OF RELEASE: May 22, 2008 SUBJECT: 4th Rabies Case CONTACT PERSON: Craig P. Umbel, R.S. TELEPHONE: 301-334-7760 Garrett County Confirms Fourth Rabies Case for 2008 Environmental Health Services of the Garrett County Health Department reports the fourth laboratory confirmed case of rabies in Garrett County for 2008. A raccoon submitted to the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene laboratory was confirmed positive for rabies on May 20, 2008. The incident occurred on May 19, 2008, in the Crellin area when two vaccinated dogs fought with a raccoon. The owners shot the raccoon and placed it in plastic bags, taking precautions not to come into contact with the wild animal or any bodily fluids. The dogs have current rabies vaccination and therefore were given a booster and will be monitored for 45 days. So far this year, Garrett County has experienced rabies in three raccoons and one skunk. Because no part of our county is untouched by rabies, it is very important to be vigilant of all wild life. It is especially important to keep your pets anti-rabies vaccinations current and up-to-date. If your dog or cat comes in contact with a wild animal, be careful not to directly handle the pet without protective gloves within two hours of the exposure. Report any incidents to the Environmental Health Services at 301-334-7760; or 301-334-1929 after business hours or weekends. Once again, pet owners are urged to check the vaccination status of their pets. You may take advantage of the Health Department sponsored low-cost rabies clinics tentatively scheduled in June. Pet owners with cats, dogs or ferrets over three months of age can safely have them vaccinated at these clinics. Pet's first vaccinations are good for one year and previously vaccinated animals good for three years. Maryland law requires all dogs, cats and ferrets to be vaccinated at four months of age. |
