News ReleaseFor Immediate Release: April 29, 2008 Contact: Bob Stephens, 301-334-7672 or rstephens@dhmh.state.md.us Commissioners Proclaim Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month The Garrett County Commissioner signed a proclamation last week declaring May as National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month. The Asthma Coalition reminds persons who suffer from allergies and asthma that May is a high pollen month. Be sure to monitor your breathing, preferably with a peak flow meter, use asthma control medications properly and use a surgical mask when outdoors if particularly susceptible to allergies. Pictured above are the Garrett County Commissioners with "Stress Stop Lights" that highlight the need for persons with asthma to know their "Asthma Action Plan". The "Asthma Action Plan" format was developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics to help asthma sufferers take control of their condition by using peak flow meters that tell when the patient is in the "caution zone" (yellow) or "danger zone" (red) when precautions need to be taken including using rescue inhalers and seeking immediate medical attention. The asthma coalition in conjunction with local medical practices will be providing asthma action plans and peak flow meters to persons who suffer from asthma. For more information about the local Asthma Coalition activities contact the Garrett County Health Department at 301-334-7730 or 301-895-3111.
