Groundbreaking Drug-Prevention Training Program
to be Held at the Garrett County Health Department

Parental Involvement is the Foundation for "How to Drug Proof Your KidsT"

Focus on the Family's How to Drug Proof Your KidsT is a prevention training program to equip parents around the country to address the tough issue of drug use with kids in their sphere of influence.

Many parents believe that when confronted with drugs or alcohol their kids will be the ones who "Just Say No." But, according to the 2004 Maryland Adolescent Survey, 70 percent of Garrett County high school seniors have used alcohol and 30 percent have used marijuana in the last year.

"Healthy communication between parents and their children is the key to reducing the risk of drug use," said Nancy Brady, Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Supervisor of the Garrett County Health Department. "With this program, parents will be given the tools and proven strategies to influence their children's choice when it comes to drug and alcohol use."

On May 31, 2008 , a trained facilitator will take local community leaders through one of the most in-depth drug awareness curriculums in the nation. Participants will increase their awareness of popular drugs and their effects, learn how help parents to engage their children in meaningful conversations, and recognize the warning signs and properly deal with kids who are already using drugs.

"Trying to talk with kids about drugs can be a daunting proposition for many parents," Brady said. "Many parents desire to help their kids make positive life choices but they just don't know where to start. How to Drug Proof Your KidsT is the tool that community leaders have been waiting for. It will give them the training they need to help give parents the confidence they need to "Drug Proof" their kids."
