Local Influenza Activity on the Rise
Written by: Cynthia Mankamyer, RN

Garrett County is seeing a sharp increase in local influenza activity. As predicted, local flu cases are being seen in February and are expected to continue. Activity so far this flu season appears to be increased compared to this time last year.

It is not too late to receive a flu vaccine; injectable flu vaccine is still available at the Garrett County Health Department. Generally, it takes about 2 weeks for the vaccine to be fully effective after receiving a flu shot. Other ways to decrease the risk of getting or giving the flu are to practice proper and frequent hand washing and reducing social contact by avoiding large gatherings. Stay home if you are sick. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

Persons interested in receiving flu vaccine may call the Garrett County Health Department at 301-334-7770 or 301-895-5355. Flu vaccine is available on a walk-in basis on Tuesdays from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm at the Oakland office, or by appointment only at the Grantsville office.
